Travelling Overseas

How are you feeling?

It might sound crazy but think about what your health care requirements are before you embark on that big trip and where you are going. Some countries will have reciprocal arrangements for health care with Australia, some won’t in either case it’s important to ensure your travel insurance is up to date and will cover you should you need to call on it.

What sort of trip do you want?

Some people thrive on long trips with multiple experiences, some just want a vacation. It’s sometimes best to try out with a series of shorter trips before you embark on that long year round travel. Don’t forget if you’ve both just finished working you are suddenly going to be together 24 hours a day for a long time!

What’s your family situation?

If you are going away for a long trip you’re not going to see the grandkids for some time (although digital channels such as skype and facetime make communication much easier these days). Do you have an elderly parent that needs support? Think about all of theses things when planning your trip.

What are your finances like?

Think about your budget and what you have put away. After all you will come home at some point and will need money for the day to day.

You’ve got flexibility.

You can travel off peak and out school holidays which can save you a bundle. A lot of operators (like cruise lines) will sell at low prices on short notice if they haven’t sold all the tickets so keep an eye out for those deals. If you know where you want to go, sign up for airline alerts for sales when they are selling at a lower cost.

Consider budget travel.

You could volunteer, work as you go or sign up for house sitting. All of these can offer unique and rewarding ways to see foreign destinations. House sitting can really give you that experience of ‘living ‘in a location as opposed to just being a tourist.

Do your research.

The more the better so you know what to expect and what to do.

Have fun and tell us all about it when you get back. Plus don’t forget to let us know so we can make sure your cards and everything is set up before you go.
